Alaska's Soil and Water Conservation Districts are authorized entities of the State of Alaska, under the Department of Natural Resources and overseen by the Commissioner's five-member Natural Resources Conservation and Development Board (NRCDB).
Because individual Districts are run by the Cooperators, they have both the opportunities afforded a State entity as well as the independent common sense, flexibility, and ability to serve their neighbors in the development and conservation of the natural resources within their control.
Because of the nature of the Alaska SWCD in being the primary entity responsible to promote and form new Districts, the NRCDB also serves as the Board of Supervisors for the Alaska SWCD.
