The History of the Alaska SWCD and all SWCDs in Alaska
The Alaska SWCD was formed in 1949 by the Alaska Territorial Government. Alaska became a state in 1959 and the Soil and Water Conservation Districts were included in the state's newly formed governmental structure. Over the years, 11 additional Districts in Alaska were formed from the Alaska District and this practice continues today as new Districts are formed.
Districts are a legacy of the 'Dust Bowl' era, an ecological disaster that decimated millions of acres of prime farmland across the nation and enveloped cities like New York in dust storms.
Nearly 3,000 conservation districts cover most of the United States. Districts help Americans develop, conserve and wisely use the natural resources within their control.
